SUMMARY:Jazz on the Stage: Dominick Farinacci and Aaron Diehl
DESCRIPTION:Dominick Farinacci and Aaron Diehl- Holiday Show\nFriday\, December 5th 7:30PM \nGeneral Admission: $65\nVIP Experience: $150 \n  \nDominick Farinacci \nTrumpeter Dominick Farinacci served as ambassador to Jazz at Lincoln from 2013-2015 in Doha\, Qatar\, working to further integrate music into communities around the world in culturally collaborative ways. He is a 2022 recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize\, an honor previously awarded to author Toni Morrison\, and Cleveland Orchestra conductors George Szell and Franz Welser-Möst. Dominick graduated from The Juilliard School in 2005 launching his career in Japan with a prolific run of eight albums\, later releasing four more globally. He has performed around the world and has been recognized by The New York Times as “a trumpeter of abundant poise.” He was a featured guest on ABC’s Good Morning America and is a TED Speaker. Dominick has been profiled in Vanity Fair\, and music icon Quincy Jones says of Dominick’s accomplishments in performance\, recording\, education & advocacy\, “This kid is 360 degrees!” \nDominick has been successful in his personal endeavors on bringing music into the community through Arts and Wellness & Education. He was invited by TED to be a TED Speaker at the 2014 TED MED conference at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. He is co-founder of Modern Warrior LIVE\, an immersive musical and narrative experience detailing a U.S. Veteran’s story of combat in Afghanistan\, highlighting the mental trauma of war and potential growth that can come through experiencing trauma. Modern Warrior LIVE has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs\, the 26th U.S. Secretary of Defense – General James Mattis – and has been showcased at Amazon Headquarters and at the National Council for Behavioral Health Conference opening for Brené Brown. \nDominick is the director of the Tri-C JazzFest Academy\, a year-round pre-college program of Cuyahoga Community College\, housed at the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts in Cleveland\, Ohio. His 2016 recording “Short Stories” was produced by four-time Grammy Award winning producer Tommy LiPuma\, and features Jacob Collier\, Christian McBride and Steve Gadd. Dominick’s recent triple EP “Reflections” features a series of duo performances with acclaimed pianists\, and has garnered more than 10 million collective streams on digital platforms in recent months. \nMore about Dominick Farinacci: https://www.dominickfarinacci.com/ \n  \nAaron Diehl\n“Diehl has built his reputation on an elegant pianism outside the contemporary mainstream…upholds a traditional framework while crisply demolishing the usual notions of conservatism” \n‍– The New York Times \nPianist Aaron Diehl has quietly re-defined the lines between jazz and classical\, and built a global career around his nuanced\, understated approach to music-making. Praised for his “melodic precision\, harmonic erudition\, and elegant restraint” (The New York Times)\, and his “traditional jazz sound with a sophisticated contemporary spin” (The Guardian)\, Diehl has performed with musical giants such as Wynton Marsalis\, Cécile McLorin Salvant\, Tyshawn Sorey\, and Philip Glass\, and has been a soloist with the New York Philharmonic\, the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, the San Francisco Symphony\, and the Cleveland Orchestra\, working with conductors like Yannick Nézet-Séguin\, Marin Alsop\, and Alan Gilbert. In 2023\, Diehl was named as the Artistic Director of 92NY’s Jazz in July Festival\, succeeding the legendary Bill Charlap. \nA leader in contemporary jazz\, the Philadelphia Inquirer exclaimed that “there’s an entire world of jazz in Aaron Diehl’s playing…he makes the case that jazz is not one style or genre but many\, gliding gorgeously among decades of artistic influences.” With an expansive\, orchestral\, lyrical approach to the piano that channels predecessors like Ahmad Jamal\, Erroll Garner\, Art Tatum and Jelly Roll Morton\, Diehl has headlined the Monterey\, Detroit\, and Newport Jazz Festivals\, and had residencies at Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Village Vanguard\, SF Jazz\, and many more. He counts among his mentors towering figures such as John Lewis\, Kenny Barron\, Fred Hersch\, Marcus Roberts\, and Eric Reed. \nDiehl’s creative vision draws equally from the Classical music tradition\, with DownBeat Magazine stating “Diehl gracefully melds two worlds\, merging the improvisational spirit of jazz with the compositional intricacies of Western classical music.” Diehl has performed with top orchestras across the US\, at leading venues like Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, The Hollywood Bowl\, the Elbphilharmonie\, and Tanglewood. He has collaborated with classical stars ranging from Inon Barnatan to J’Nai Bridges to The Knights\, and his compositions have been commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival\, Glenmorangie Scotch\, and others. \nIn the 2023-24 season\, Diehl and his trio\, featuring bassist David Wong and drummer Aaron Kimmel\, open the New Jersey Symphony’s season with a program that includes Still’s Out of the Silence and Ellington’s New World A-Comin’. The trio also makes its St. Louis Symphony Orchestra debut with a performance of Mary Lou Williams’s Zodiac Suite. As the 2024 Resonate Festival artist-in-residence\, Diehl will explore the theme of musical intersections\, with works by John Lewis\, Mary Lou Williams’ Zodiac Suite and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D minor\, conducted by Eric Jacobsen. In the spring\, Diehl joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the world premiere of Timo Andres’s new piano concerto\, conducted by John Adams. \nDuring the 2022-23 season\, Diehl was featured alongside Bill Charlap and Kenny Barron as part of 92NY’s “Three Generations at the Piano” program during Charlap’s penultimate season as the Jazz in July music director. Diehl would later go on to perform alongside fellow pianists Isaiah J. Thompson and Caelan Cardello as part of Charlap’s final season. As Kaufman Music Center’s 2022 Artist-in-Residence\, Diehl presented a recital program that included Sir Roland Hanna’s lesser known 24 Preludes. He would later go on to present the 24 Preludes in a trio performance at Tanglewood. Diehl also performed Zodiac Suite with the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras under the batons of Cristian Măcelaru and Jader Bignamini\, respectively. \nIn September 2023\, Diehl released his recording of Mary Lou Williams’s Zodiac Suite with The Knights\, a Brooklyn-based orchestral collective led by conductor Eric Jacobsen. As the first-ever studio recording of Mary Lou Willams’s Zodiac Suite\, it has been touted as “a joyous\, enchanting creation… a triumph” (The Guardian) with Diehl lauded as “a contemporary champion” (The New York Times) and “a perfect choice to preside over this landmark recording” (The Wall Street Journal). The album features Diehl’s trio and guest artists saxophonist Nicole Glover\, clarinetist Evan Christopher\, trumpeter Brandon Lee\, and soprano Mikaela Bennett. The critically-acclaimed album is Diehl’s fourth recording on Mack Avenue Records\, following 2020’s The Vagabond\, 2015’s Space Time Continuum\, and his 2013 label debut\, The Bespoke Man’s Narrative. \nDiehl was born in Columbus\, Ohio\, where he grew up listening to his grandfather\, pianist and trombonist Arthur Baskerville. His family nurtured Diehl’s undeniable musical talents from a young age and in 2002\, a 16-year-old Diehl competed in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition\, where he placed as a finalist. It was there that he attracted the attention of Wynton Marsalis\, who invited Diehl to join his septet for a European tour. After studying at Julliard under the direction of Kenny Barron\, Eric Reed and Oxana Yablonskaya\, Diehl was awarded the 2011 American Pianists Association’s Cole Porter Fellowship. Diehl\, who holds commercial single and multi-engine pilot certifications\, inherited a lifelong love of flying from his father who was himself an avid pilot. Diehl has been a Steinway Artist since 2016.

SONOS)\nChristian Tremblay\, Rachel Franklin\, Jonathan Miles Brown \nRachel Franklin \nBritish-born concert pianist Dr. Rachel Franklin is a renowned performer and music lecturer. As a Pro Musicis International Award winner\, she gave her solo debuts in Carnegie Recital Hall\, New York\, and Jordan Hall\, Boston. The Boston Globe enthused about her “beautiful differentiations of color\, touch and texture” and described a performance on her solo debut CD as “not inferior…to the recorded performances by Cortot and Rubinstein.” She has also given European Pro Musicis solo debuts in Paris and Rome. At the Wigmore Hall\, London\, critics applauded her “stunning individuality\,” and “amazing power and solidity of technique.” The Washington Post has praised her “cool-headed bravura and panache” and the Baltimore Sun lauded the “warmth and electricity in her playing.” Recent successes include concertos with the Columbia Orchestra\, the Arlington Philharmonic\, the Amadeus Orchestra\, the Washington Sinfonietta\, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra\, the Piedmont Symphony and others. She is also doubly talented as an accomplished jazz pianist\, and has led her classical/jazz chamber ensemble SONOS for over a decade. \nDeeply committed to musical outreach and education\, Rachel has a busy dual career as a popular music speaker\, and since 2020 she has been greatly in demand for her unique online presentations. She is one of the Smithsonian Associates’ most popular live-streaming lecturers\, and her topics explore intersections between classical and jazz music\, film scores\, and the fine arts. She is the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Strathmore Music Scholar in Residence and gives all the BSO’s pre-concert presentations at their Bethesda\, MD venue\, Strathmore Hall\, as part of their “Inside the Classics” series. In 2023 she was one of the featured speakers at the Aspen Ideas: Health Conference in Colorado\, presenting and performing on the subject of Music and the Natural World\, a topic about which she was interviewed by WHYY’s Maiken Scott for The Pulse. For the past two New Years she has given the Plenary Lunchtime Performance for the prestigious Renaissance Weekend conference in Charleston\, SC\, and in May 2024 she presented a unique show on 90 years of film music Oscars for the Avalon Theatre Chevy Chase’s annual gala \nHer wide range of musical expertise has brought her back repeatedly to enthusiastic audiences across the region\, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra\, Easton Academy Art Museum\, the Chesapeake Film Festival and many others. \nChristian Tremblay \nDr. Christian Tremblay enjoys a diverse\, exciting career as performer and pedagogue. Most recently he performed in multiple concerts and coached chamber music as string faculty for the prestigious Heifetz International Music Institute. He is Director of the Performance Academy for Strings\, and Chair of the String Department at the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He is also violin and chamber music faculty at Peabody Conservatory. \nChristian Tremblay holds a Diplôme D’Études Supérieures II from the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec where he studied with Liliane Garnier-Le Sage. He also earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Peabody Conservatory studying with violinist Martin Beaver. Christian Tremblay has been heard in cities throughout Canada and the United States as a recitalist and chamber musician. He is a member of the SONOS classical/jazz trio with pianist Rachel Franklin and bassist Jonathan Miles Brown\, and is Principal Second violin with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra\, performing regularly with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic. \nJonathan Miles Brown  \nDr. Jonathan Brown started his musical career as a chorister in the choir of Truro Cathedral\, UK where in addition to singing at services and concerts he gave several solo recitals around the South West of the UK. At university he took up the electric bass\, imparting his “singing” to the instrument.  Subsequently he performed with a wide range of jazz artists in formats including UK and European jazz festivals\, BBC broadcasts\, and venues such as the National Theatre\, London and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. These days\, when he’s not running various biotechnology projects\, he can be found playing in jazz venues in the DC area. He has been a frequent performer at the annual Maryland Summer Jazz festival and is a regular member of the “workshops” run by Annapolis based sax star Jeff Antoniuk. \nJonathan’s instrument is a Jazz Bass\, originally hand built by Leo Fender\, which he has ultra-customized by removing the frets\, re-siting the bridge and adding numerous self-designed features and circuits.  The result is a wide sonic spectrum\, from woody warmth to metallic brilliance\, with glittering harmonics and large dynamic range.  Commented the Baltimore Sun: “The warm sound Brown produces is like no other I’ve heard.” \nContact SONOS at rff@rachelfranklin.com
