As his investigation proceeds\, Ruffing becomes involved in the lives of the five women who live there: Marcy\, a Viennese governess with a past; Mrs. Ravenscroft\, the flirtatious first lady of the manor; Gillian\, her charming but possibly crazy daughter; Mrs. French\, the formidable cook; and Dolly\, a terrified maid. They lead him through a bewildering labyrinth of contradictory versions of Roarke’s death and the earlier death of Mr. Ravenscroft.
