Celebration of Emancipation Day in Partnership with Talbot Historical Society and Post 77 VFW.

As part of their exhibit “With Valor and Honor: Talbot County’s United States Colored Troops During the Civil War.” the Nathanial Hopkins’ story is featured—a former enslaved individual who volunteered for the USCT.

Hopkins emerged as an influential post-war leader within Talbot County. Renowned for his integrity and leadership, he earned wide respect for assisting individuals in need regardless of race and contributed to the establishment of schools, churches, and black communities following the Civil War.

Hopkins’ most notable accomplishment, however, was founding Maryland’s—and likely the nation’s—first
Emancipation Day celebration in 1867, an event still observed annually and set to be celebrated this year with a parade through Trappe on Nov. 1 and a professional storytelling at OCC.

FREE, but RSVP.
