Oxford Museum Benefit: Piga-Figa-Licious

Join family and friends on Labor Day, September 2, for Piga-Figa-Licious, Oxford’s fundraiser which benefits the Oxford Museum. It will be held at the Oxford Fire Hall from noon until 3 p.m. In addition to great all-you-can eat roast pork and turkey with all the fixins from the legendary Butch Frase, there will be special dishes created with figs by Oxford’s own chef extraordinaire, Richard Bank. Plus entertainment by DJ Chris Startt, a 50/50 cash raffle and other surprises.

A celebration of Woodstock’s 50th Anniversary.  Featured artists include Walter Parks with Kentavius Jones, performing some of Richie Havens’ songs from his opening set at Woodstock. Chris Noyes will share Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” song and favorite songs and anthems from Woodstock and the past five decades.  The audience will be invited to join the featured performers in singing along on the choruses. Tickets are $20. Spend an afternoon reminiscing and celebrating one another.

Professor Tricia Wachtendorf, will be speaking about community vulnerability to natural disasters, including sea rise. Dr. Wachendorf directs the Disaster Research Center at the University of Delaware, where she specializes in research on community and behavioral responses to disaster. Dr. Wachtendorf has published and consulted extensively on disaster preparedness and recovery, including following hurricanes Maria (Puerto Rico), Harvey (Houston), and Sandy (New York), earthquakes (Japan), and the devastation of 9/11. Edna E. Lockwood, the last historic sailing bugeye in the world and queen of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s floating fleet, is on a National Park Service partly-funded heritage tour around the Chesapeake Bay. Edna Lockwood recently underwent a two-year restoration of her nine-log hull at CBMM. Kerianne Hinerman is an aerial artist with years of experience teaching. Her sixty minute aerial fabric classes are designed to introduce you to movement with, in, and around the silks. The class will focus on balance along with core and muscle strengthening. You will learn the basic skills in aerial fabric technique including knot work, how to transition in and out of poses, and even go upside down!  The silks are not hung higher than 2.5 feet, so no worries…
