LOCAL CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS & PLACES OF WORSHIP

Efforts to save the church, cook shop and cemetery from deterioration and to transform the property into a heritage site began in 2003 with the realization that an important piece of Talbot County’s African American history was about to be lost. The John Wesley Preservation Society, incorporated in 2010, was formed to support this effort.

The mission of the John Wesley Preservation Society is to restore and maintain the culturally significant church, cook shop, cemetery and grounds, and raise money to support and manage this work. The Society develops and promotes educational and cultural programs and public displays, and historical and archaeological research related to the historical significance of the site, consistent with State, Federal, local and grant guidelines and requirements for such sites.

The Oxford Community Center building (OCC) has served as a community resource for over 80 years, first as a grammar school and then a high school and, for the last quarter century, as a cultural center and meeting place. OCC is the hub of the community and provides residents and visitors alike a year-round schedule of educational, social, cultural, and recreational programs and events. It is indeed a mid-shore treasure enriching lives since 1928.

The Center’s mission is to ‘enrich community life by fostering educational, cultural and social opportunities’ and is open to all.

Serving the community as volunteers since 1921! The Auxiliary supports the Fire House Breakfast each month, hosts rummage sales and has 2 antique shows per year, and many other fund-raising events to support the Fire Department.

The Oxford Garden Club or (OGC), was founded in 2003 and joined the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland in 2004. Members maintain the gardens at the Oxford Community Center, The Oxford Library and The Oxford Museum. The Museum garden, reminiscent of an old cottage garden, was designed and installed by the garden club. You can’t help but notice the beautiful flowers and gardens throughout Oxford. R

esidents take a great deal of pride in their flowers! Members provide flower arrangements for shut-ins at holidays several times a year, provide youth gardening projects, participate in town events such as Oxford Day, and provide floral designs for Fine Arts at Oxford’s gala opening. OGC sponsors a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony and participates in both Wreaths Across America in December and the placement of flags for Veteran’s Day, both at Hurlock Veterans Cemetery.

The Museum began in 1964 with the finding of 18th and 19th century bottles and pottery shards. From these first artifacts has evolved a rare mosaic depicting Oxford’s past. As such, the museum has become a valuable part of the understanding of the more than 325 years of Oxford history. Its exhibits are exclusively devoted to its people, their way of life, and their contribution to our country since the 1600s.

We are proud of our many treasures including old photographs, clothing, antique engines, boat building tools, models, paintings, furniture, documents, war items, Native American items, pottery, china and waterman tools.

The Tred Avon Players, Inc. (TAP) was organized in 1982 to present plays and musicals at the Oxford Community Center. Since the first sold-out melodramas in August of that year, TAP has grown in community stature and artistic merit to present a mix of plays and musicals each year in one of the most beautiful towns on the Eastern Shore, for a growing, enthusiastic audience.

Our Mission is Simple: To motivate and train local volunteers in the theatrical arts and to present the best possible production of a wide variety of enjoyable shows. Although a number of our stage volunteers have professional experience, each one is an amateur – a lover of the stage!

The year was 1931, the place was Oxford, Maryland on the Eastern Shore. Oxford offered all the natural resources for pleasant and relaxed living as well as playing. Town Creek and the Tred Avon and Choptank Rivers were just waiting to be enjoyed. In an effort to make available to the people an avenue to these great natural resources, a bath house was built on pilings near the water’s edge. It was equipped with a sturdy rail procured from a ship salvage yard in Baltimore that gave the roof a salty and nautical look. A series of lights gave it a festive look. Upon this roof is where the organization of the Kap-Dun Club took place and later the Tred Avon Yacht Club was born.

Very shortly, membership climbed to over ninety members, the name Tred Avon Yacht Club was adopted and a new club burgee was adopted. Sailing regattas almost immediately became well known and well attended. Over the years the members of TAYC have retained a spirit of belonging to a real team effort both on the water and on land. The natural resources provided by our location, the closeness among our members due to our common interest and mission, and our sincere delight in sharing our good fortunes with other sailors have always made this club unique. TAYC’ers take pride in welcoming sailors and hope that our weather and waters cooperate to make your visit one to remember.
